Big Band Fusion: A Musical Journey Along the Drava River

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be at the heart of the creative process, crafting a unique musical experience that takes listeners on a captivating journey? That's exactly what I experienced while working on my latest album, "Big Band Fusion."

This album was born from a deep desire to create a comprehensive repertoire for a big band while showcasing the classical guitar as a solo instrument. The goal was to infuse a rock-oriented attitude into the music, drawing inspiration from the incredible power of big bands and their electrifying sonic experiences.

Big bands have always fascinated with their powerful sound, an array of brass instruments, and solid rhythm sections. With today's live sound technology, they can deliver a punch that hits you right in the heart. The album explores a fusion of genres, including rock, Balkan, ethno, classical, and even a hint of reggae.

What sets this album apart are several unique elements that make it stand out. The classical guitar is seamlessly incorporated as a solo instrument, achieving the challenging task of making an electro-classical guitar with nylon strings sound akin to an electric guitar, complete with a rich distortion. This was inspired by the signature distortion sound of Eric Johnson.

The album also introduces the enchanting sounds of the flute and the resonating tones of the tuba, adding layers of depth and a touch of symphonic grandeur to the big band. The collaboration of these instruments with the bass guitar and the third trombone creates a captivating landscape of bass sub-frequencies that harmoniously blend with the modern soundscape.

"Big Band Fusion" came to life with the expertise of renowned producer Rengert Eggink from Rotterdam. The live concert recordings were impeccably recorded by Miha Arnus, known for his work with iconic artists like Paul McCartney. Rengert truly understands the music and took it to the next level.

What makes "Big Band Fusion" truly special is that all the recordings are from live concerts, providing an unpolished, raw, and authentic listening experience that studio recordings cannot replicate. These electrifying live performances were captured in the towns of Radlje ob Dravi, Vuzenica, and Maribor, along the scenic banks of the Drava River.

During one recording, there was a memorable challenge when a cable got entangled under the wah-wah pedal, leading to an unexpected but captivating guitar performance in the song "Raindrops."

Among the album's highlights is "Dobro jutro jaz," a power ballad that conveys a heartfelt message about home, self-love, compassion, and the beauty of life, even when faced with obstacles. The song's inspiration is closely connected to a cherished mental safe spot overlooking the Drava River.

"Raindrops" is another gem, translating the rhythmic patterns of two water droplets falling on a windowpane into a captivating composition with African-inspired guitar riffs and a dynamic drum and conga solo exchange.

"Big Band Fusion" is already available for music enthusiasts to enjoy, accessible via Bandcamp. Additionally, live performance videos featuring "Raindrops" and "Dobro jutro jaz" can be found on YouTube.

Looking ahead, there's a desire to collaborate with other big bands and musicians, seeking to expand musical horizons and connect with kindred musical souls from around the world. The rich tapestry of the big band culture holds the promise of exciting collaborations on the horizon.

In conclusion, "Big Band Fusion" aims to resonate with a diverse audience, from rock and metal aficionados to jazz and world music enthusiasts. The album's unique blend of genres promises to captivate and inspire music lovers worldwide.
